Fall Prevention: Improving Strength, Balance and Flexibility in Older Adults

Older adults are the fastest growing population in the United States. Falls are a major public health concern in older adults, and the leading cause of injury-related death in this age group. Chiropractors are well-suited by their training and expertise to assess fall risk in older adults and implement evidence-based fall prevention strategies. In this session, Dr. Lisa Killinger, DC, will examine the issue of fall prevention in older adults. She will explore why older patients fall and review evidence-based assessment tools related to fall risk. Strategies to improve several of the key causes of falls will be shared. Simple steps will be discussed to improve the balance, strength and flexibility of older adult patients, while not ignoring the role posture plays in falls as well.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the role of balance, strength and flexibility in fall prevention in older adults. 
  • Recognize standard evidence based assessment methods for fall risk and balance deficits.
  • List and explain simple strategies in clinical practice to decrease fall risk in older adults.

Lisa Killinger, D.C., is a 1983 Palmer College Graduation and a professor of Diagnosis at Palmer College of Chiropractic. Dr. Killinger teaches Geriatrics, Pediatrics, Men’s & Women’s Health, and chiropractic technique courses for students, educators and health professionals.  She is a frequent invited speaker at international scientific conferences. She has published 9 book chapters on geriatrics and over 75 publications in the scientific literature, and has received dozens of awards for her teaching, research and civic engagement over the past two decades. 

Dr. Killinger has directed or co-directed eight US governmental program development grants on the topic of geriatric education and interdisciplinary care. She also served as a site coordinator for the Health Resources and Services Administration funded Iowa Geriatric Education Center for over 10 years. She is currently the sole chiropractor serving as an advisor to the US Government on the topic of Developing Interdisciplinary Community Based Linkages.
