    Evaluation and treatment of the athlete is a popular and growing focus for many chiropractors. Diagnostic imaging serves an important role in the overall management of injuries incurred during sport, impacting athletes from the recreational league to the professional level.

    Evaluation and treatment of the athlete is a popular and growing focus for many chiropractors. Diagnostic imaging serves an important role in the overall management of injuries incurred during sport, impacting athletes from the recreational league to the professional level. This presentation will focus on the role of diagnostic imaging in the neuromusculoskeletal evaluation of athletes from a variety of sports. A case-based approach will be used to discuss when to order imaging for an athlete and what imaging modality is most effective for the evaluation of suspected injuries. Each case will feature a review of common imaging findings for conditions of the neuromusculoskeletal system as seen on radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and diagnostic ultrasound as applicable. A variety of imaging examples will be provided for each condition. This course will feature interactive, anonymous quizzing of the audience to encourage active participation and evaluation of the cases presented.  

    Upon completion of this presentation, learners should be able to:  

    • Discuss the appropriate imaging recommendations for common athletic injuries to the upper and lower extremities.  
    • Identify common imaging features of musculoskeletal injuries on radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and diagnostic ultrasound, where applicable.

    Ashlee Kates-Ascioti, DC, MS, DACBR, earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northeast College of Health Sciences in 2016. She continued her studies at Northeast in the Master of Science in Diagnostic Imaging residency program, graduating in 2019. That same year, she became a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology (DACBR).  

    Dr. Kates-Ascioti is an assistant professor at Parker University, where she enjoys teaching in the DC curriculum and assisting in resident training. She currently serves as the vice president of the ACA Council on Diagnostic Imaging, as a co-organizer for the annual Resident Educational Workshop for the American Chiropractic College of Radiology (ACCR), and as a member on a variety of committees for Parker University and the ACCR. Dingell VA Medical Center, where he is a staff psychologist for the Mental Health Homeless Program. Prior to joining the VA, Dr. Comrie was the Mental Health Lead at Crossover Health Detroit, where he led a team of mental health professionals and conducted research on the differing factors that can negatively influence not only mental healthcare, but whole health as well. 

    Dr. Comrie earned his Ph.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy and completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Ascension Genesys Hospital. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Comrie serves as Chairperson for the Michigan Psychological Association (MPA) Pain Psychology Task Force and as Vice-Chairperson for the Michigan Health Professional Recovery Committee. Outside of work, Dr. Comrie emphasizes the importance of physical activity in mental health treatment.     This one-hour course discusses the importance of movement and exercise for older patients from the perspective of flexibility, balance, strength, floor recovery, bone density, muscle composition, ADL independence, fall prevention, and quality of life maintenance that you, as a chiropractor, are well-positioned to program. The course also reviews how to effectively program rehab and conditioning for older adult patients. As our patients age, conversations surrounding the importance of bone, joint, and muscle health are much different than conversations with younger patients. Every year we age, it is more challenging to maintain muscle mass, bone density, and walking capacity if we are not actively training to do so. Older adults have a vast variety of “starting lines” and “finish lines” for exercise pursuits, and many can tolerate advice beyond the generalized stretching they are usually prescribed. This course will discuss resources available for movement and exercise support for our patients as well as common barriers (lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication, joint replacements, fall risk, etc.) and how to navigate them. The course will review how to reverse engineer functional goal setting and how to incrementally progress. We will discuss ongoing initiatives such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s STEADI Algorithm, the American Public Health Association’s 2023 Fall Prevention Initiative, and any updates from the Clinical Compass Best Practice Guideline.     Stuart McIntosh, DC, MS, is the secretary for the ACA Rehab Council. He is also an associate professor at Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC), actively contributing to the Doctor of Chiropractic program. Dr. McIntosh earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan University. He furthered his education with a Master of Science in Sports Science and Rehabilitation.  

    Dr. McIntosh’s professional journey began in private practice, and in 2014, he joined CUKC. At the university, he has served as a full-time clinical educator, overseeing and mentoring interns in patient care at the Chiropractic Health Center. Currently, Dr. McIntosh is an academic instructor, specializing in physiotherapy courses within the chiropractic program.
