This lecture will focus on the influences of the vestibular system on controlling posture and the postural compensations that occur with unilateral vestibular loss.  Further emphasis will be placed on how the brain attempts to use other sensory inputs to substitute for vestibular deficits and how those substitutions influence posture.

Upon completion of this presentation, learners should be able to:

  • Identify the two sensory substitutions seen in unilateral vestibular loss.
  • Interpret how sensory substitution influences posture.
  • Identify whether a patient’s posture is a secondary compensation for a vestibular loss.
